Young Woul Chun-Strickland

January 23, 1940 — October 23, 2023

Nahunta

Young Woul Chun-Strickland, 83, passed peacefully at home in Nahunta, Georgia, on October 23.  She was born in the small village of Jinan-Gun, in the province of Jeonbuk, South Korea.  She served in the South Korean Army as a nurse,  and met her future husband, Malcolm Reese Strickland, while he was stationed in Korea with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.

After emigrating to the United States in 1974, Young had a 25-year career as a nurse at Bellevue Hospital in New York City.  She easily adapted to big-city life, getting around on her bicycle.

Young remained close to her Korean family throughout her life, despite the geographic distance. She was especially close to her niece, Kim Chun Won; her nephew, Min Hong Jeon, and her cousin and childhood friend, Chong Kim.

Years after their initial meeting in Korea, Young and Malcolm met again, and were married on June 12, 1993. He built a home on beloved family land, near his childhood home in Nahunta, Georgia. A skilled woodworker, he filled their home with handcrafted furniture.   Young's favorite was a rocking chair that Malcolm designed to fit her perfectly.

Young and Malcolm enjoyed a long, happy retirement together in this paradise.  Sadly,  Malcolm died from Covid in 2020.   Young also contracted Covid, and subsequently struggled with multiple health issues.  She was blessed with loving help from friends and family, including Hong Suk, Carol and Mike Lee, Rosemary Strickland, Cindy Lucas, and a special caregiver, Marie Dowling.

Family and friends are invited to attend a joint graveside funeral for both Young and Malcolm Strickland on Tuesday (November 7, 2023) at 2:00PM at the Smyrna Cemetery in Nahunta with Military Honors for Malcolm.  She will be buried beside her beloved Malcolm.  The service will be led by Reverend Elvin Woods.

In remembrance of Young and Malcolm's lives, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the Smyrna Cemetery Association, in care of Barbara Morris, 601 Buck Lake Rd, Nahunta, GA 30553.    Malcolm served on the board of this 501(c) charity, which maintains the grounds of the Smyrna Cemetery.
