Nahunta-Ray Sumner, 75, of Nahunta passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Satilla Hospice House after a brief illness.
Born in Jacksonville, Florida to the late Jessie Floyd Sumner and Thelma Baldree Sumner. He is also preceded in death by 10 siblings Marie Crosby, Josephine Beaver, James Sumner, Martha Engle, Diane Lamontagne, Frankie Sumner, Faye Bratcher, Dean Sumner, Jean Vann and William "Bill" Sumner.
Ray was a loving father, brother, and uncle who meant the world to his family. He shared a special bond with his dog, Dudley, whom he loved like a child. The two spent countless miles together on the road in his semi, creating memories that brought him great joy. Ray was known for his playful spirit and his ability to “pick” and get those around him riled up, always bringing laughter wherever he went. His personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. A proud American, Ray served his country with honor and dedication. Following a jumping accident, he was honorably discharged, a testament to his courage and commitment. Ray will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his love, humor, and the strong sense of loyalty he carried throughout his life.
Survivors include a son Michael Sumner (Allyson) of Hortense, a daughter Nicole Tomberlin (Shon) of Alma; seven grandchildren Danielle, Blake, Payton, Austin, Wyatt, Taylor (Jodi) and Jase; four great grandchildren Baylor, Tripp, Jesse and Coleman; a sister Carlis Sumner of Chiefland, Florida; a special sister in law Debra Sumner and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm on Friday, April 10, 2026, at Waynesville Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Wainwright officiating.
Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
