Mary Lou Highsmith Carter

Waynesville-Mary Lou Highsmith Carter, 75 of Waynesville, passed away Wednesday morning (January 2, 2013) at her residence following an extended illness. Born in Nahunta, her parents were Henry J. and Ellen Griffin Highsmith. She is also preceded in death by four sisters, Elizabeth Highsmith Glydell, Lorena Dubose, Viola Lyons, and Minnie Pearl Highsmith; two brothers, Woodrow Highsmith, and infant Virgil Highsmith. Mary worked as a caregiver and was a member of Sterling Church of God. She loved taking care of elderly people, and was very proud of her nine children. Survivors include her Common Law Husband , Fred Browning, of Waynesville; nine children and their spouses, Vickie and Wayne Hudnall, of Sissonville, WV, Linda and Gary Houston, of Waynesville, Wanda Sanders, Virgil Lewis, Donald and Connie Lewis, all of Houston, TX., Dennis Lewis, of Burkeville, VA, Peggy and Joey Slaughter, of Brunswick, Tina Lewis, of Kingsland, and Annette Popwell, of Brunswick; 22 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Also several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Visitation will be held Friday evening (January 4, 2013) from 6-9PM at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday (January 5, 2013) at 1 PM at Frye Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Walden and Rev. Larry Daughtry officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Joey Lewis, Jeremy McGarry, Jason McGarry, Jessie McGarry, Phillip (Daniel) Popwell, Chris Houston, Michael Houston, Travis Popwell, Andrew Popwell, and Donald Lewis, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Sanders, Jr., Gannon Shoemaker and Samuel Houston. Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta. Sympathy may be expressed by signing our online registry at fryefh.com.
