Hoboken – Mary Evelyn Dowling, 97, of Hoboken passed away Saturday morning (January 10, 2026) at her home surrounded by her loved ones from old age.
Born in Hoboken, GA her parents were Edgar Carlton Redding and Effie Eugenie Lee Redding. She is also preceded in death by her first husband, John Elvin Griffin; her husband, Floyd Eugene Dowling; a daughter, Mary Madass Spinnato; 5 sisters, Elvera O’Berry, Ruby Pearl Boatright; Effie Mae Strickland, Doris Crews and Virginia Strickland; and 2 brothers, Eugene Carlton Redding and John Ellis Redding.
Mary was a homemaker and a member of Hoboken Baptist Church. She loved sewing, coloring, fishing and doing word searches and number searches. Mary had a green thumb and loved flowers, plants and gardening.
Survivors include 4 sons and daughters-in-law, James Elvin Griffin (Sherrie) of Blackshear, Jimmy Gene Dowling, Virgil Dowling (Janice) and Marvin Dowling all of Hoboken; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Evelyn Phillips (Chuck) of Chickamauga, GA; 13 grandchildren, Mindy Edge, Ashley Kelley, Derrick Daniels, Chase Griffin, Haley Griffin, Kelly Griffin, Joaini Griffin, Sandie Moore, Sammy Dowling, Craig Dowling, Tiffany Dowling, Matthew Dowling and Timothy Dowling; 10 great grandchildren; a brother, Darwood Redding of Hoboken; 2 sisters, Louise Dawson of Hoboken and Benita Thomas of Savannah; and also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday evening (January 11, 2026) from 5pm-7pm at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
A graveside service will be held Monday morning (January 12, 2026) at 11am at Hoboken Cemetery with Rev. Tim Rowell officiating.
Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
